The society surfaced as a registered charity in the year 2001, following a course of lectures Discovering Old Shirenewton’ offered locally, by Cardiff University, Centre for Lifelong Learning.It now lists over 100 local and some national history enthusiasts as members with diverse interests, which include among it’s many facets, archaeology, social and industrial evolution and genealogy.The aims of the society are to increase the interest and knowledge of the local and wider community in the history, geography and architecture of the Parish of Shirenewton, and it’s environs, often expanding into nearby parishes, the county of Monmouthshire and the rest of Wales.It also assists in the preservation, protection, development and improvement of features of historic and public interest in the above area, and exchanges information and advice with other similar groups and associations.
